Using standardized abbreviations in donorNet to reduce patient safety risk

If Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) use non-standard abbreviations to enter information in DonorNet, the transplant centers can possibly misinterpret the information and place the patient’s safety at risk. The OPTN/UNOS Transplant Administrators Committee and the OPTN/UNOS Organ Procurement Organization Committee, with help from other committees, has created a list of recommended standardized abbreviations for OPOs to use when entering information in DonorNet. This will help eliminate miscommunication between OPOs and Transplant Centers and reduce the patient safety risk.
