UNOS Completes its First Electronic Election

UNOS recently held our first electronic election for the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors.
Voting members received links to a secure web application where they could vote as well as view extensive information about each candidate including their personal statement. The new process saved significant staff resources, audit costs, and hopefully a few trees.

62 percent of 381 eligible members voted. To evaluate the new process, UNOS surveyed voting members.  94.5% of respondents reported they were “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the electronic voting process.

The survey revealed opportunities to improve the ballot notification process to prevent email from being blocked or delayed by spam filters.  Our goal for next year is to increase voter participation to at least 70% and further streamline the process.  One of our board positions was decided by one vote this year, so increasing the number of voters could make a real difference.
