UNOS honored for innovation in technology

The Richmond Technology Council (RichTech) honored UNOS with an Innovation in Development Award for its recent launch of a data portal that provides organ donation and transplant professionals nationwide with timely and convenient access to critical information and data. The award was presented at a ceremony May 11.

“We are grateful for this recognition of peers in the technology field for our continuous, real-time support for the lifesaving mission of transplantation,” said Alex Tulchinsky, UNOS’ Chief Technology Officer. “This is the third time UNOS has been honored in the 21-year history of the awards, which reflects our ongoing commitment to develop and improve our technology services.”

UNOS received the award for the December 2015 launch of a data portal used by professionals at member transplant hospitals, organ procurement organizations and histocompatibility laboratories. The portal represents a significant improvement and positively impacts the organ donation and transplantation community by providing:

  • self-service access to many reports used for clinical management and quality improvement, which eliminates significant lead time and manual effort previously required to generate reports
  • access to more timely data in reports, allowing professionals to view actionable clinical information more quickly
  • data visualization functionality, allowing members to produce graphs and charts for more sophisticated analysis of data and trends

The annual Richmond Technology Awards celebrate individuals and organizations located in Central Virginia who have made significant contributions to technology services in corporate, educational, community and public service settings.

UNOS, a private, nonprofit organization, unites and supports the organ donation and transplantation community nationwide through organ placement, research, technology, policy development and education. UNOS serves as the nation’s Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) under federal contract. As the OPTN, it matches lifesaving organs with people awaiting transplants nationwide. Also, it manages the national database of medical information about transplant candidates, recipients and donors.
