David Klassen, M.D.

Chief Medical Officer

David Klassen joined UNOS in 2014 as chief medical officer. In this role, he offers an experienced clinical perspective to our policymaking and patient safety efforts. He reports to the CEO and assists her in developing, planning and implementing UNOS’ strategic direction.

Klassen was the medical director of the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Programs at the University of Maryland Hospital, where he was as a faculty member beginning in 1986. He has a long history of volunteer leadership with UNOS and many professional societies such as the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Nephrology. Klassen served a term on the OPTN Board of Directors and as a member of the OPTN Kidney Transplantation and Membership and Professional Standards committees.

Klassen earned his medical degree from the Ohio State University in Columbus and completed his internal medicine and nephrology training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
