The Liver and Intestinal Organ Transplantation Committee is considering changes to the policy for HCC exception priority. Your feedback will help the Committee draft a proposal for public comment, to be circulated in the spring of 2013.
Committee members have already received feedback from the community that the current policy may provide too much priority to candidates with HCC exceptions relative to those patients who are listed with a calculated MELD score at similar levels. There is a wide variation in the rate of HCC dropout (i.e., removal from the list due to death or being too sick for transplant) between candidates with and without HCC exceptions.
