The recent events of 2020 have shed a brutal spotlight on the issue of racism in our country and throughout the world. As a community of people who are devoted to saving lives, organ donation and transplant professionals are united in the mission to ensure the equitable allocation of organs to all people, regardless of race and ethnicity, yet must reckon with the fact that racial disparities continue to exist in organ transplantation.
Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Minority Affairs Committee leaders Irene Kim, M.D. and Paulo Martins, M.D., Ph.D., recently offered insight into how the donation and transplant community collaborates to examine potential impacts that OPTN policy changes could have on access to transplant, and discussed the MAC’s role in upholding the Final Rule mandate to ensure “the equitable allocation of cadaveric organs.”
