Upcoming improvements to allocation of deceased donor kidneys for candidates in the U.S. will likely improve overall patient survival and lengthen kidney function, according to a study published online on May 15 by the JASN.
The goal of the guidance is to educate providers and patients with kidney disease about transplantation as a treatment option.
It is intended to raise awareness among referring physicians of the importance of early referral and pre-emptive listing for transplantation.
Currently, about 57 percent of eligible transplant programs participate in the program.
Reviews will begin when the SRTR releases its January 2014 PSR’s in March 2014.
The board approved substantial amendments to OPTN policy for deceased donor kidney allocation. Implementation of the policy is expected to occur at the end of 2014.
