UNet applications will add multi-factor authentication (MFA) in early 2022: what you should know

As a UNetSM user, the information you gather, submit, change and maintain is highly sensitive. To safeguard that information from security threats, UNOS has committed to securing all UNet applications with multi-factor authentication (MFA).

What is multi-factor authentication?

When you log into a website or an application using your username and password, you are using single-factor authentication. MFA goes one step beyond the single-factor process and utilizes a second factor (a.k.a. credential), making for a much more secure environment.

Developed in collaboration with transplant hospitals and OPOs, UNOS’ MFA will use a service called Authy (a Twilio product) to provide a second factor for UNet users. Authy is being integrated into UNet in collaboration with Twilio – a leading cloud communication platform.

What you need to do now

While there is nothing you need to do now, over the next few weeks, we will be emailing you step-by-step instructions on how to install and register Authy on your mobile device or desktop.

Other important things to know

  • Because of specific restrictions your center may have on downloading applications, you may need to reach out for assistance from your IT staff.
  • Once MFA is enabled on your device/computer and you have completed the registration process, the login process will be simple and will not add any significant time to your login process.
