CMS issues COVID-19 guidance to health care providers

New adult elective surgery and procedure guidelines prioritize transplant surgeries as essential care

Transplant surgeries should be considered high priority and should not be postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic, if possible, according to new guidance issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services at a White House Coronavirus Task Force press briefing on Wednesday. The guidance recommends limiting all nonessential planned surgeries and procedures until further notice, but identified transplants as Tier 3b procedures that should not be postponed.
