Simulated modeling results now available for continuous distribution of kidney and pancreas

*Updated Jan. 11, 2023

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Committees have received simulation modeling results from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR).

This first round of modeling will help inform the committees’ work to transition the current kidney and pancreas allocation systems to a continuous distribution framework.  Continuous distribution is a points-based and more patient-focused system for organ allocation, and is predicted to increase equity among potential recipients.

The committees are currently in the process of determining the weights of attributes for kidney and pancreas allocation. This phase of kidney and pancreas policy development will involve multiple modeling requests from the SRTR, and the committees use the results, along with other tools, to help inform the policy proposals that will eventually go out for public comment.
