Today, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) issued the following statement on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee’s inclusion of $67 million in funding in the Labor HHS appropriations budget for fiscal year (FY) 2025 for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to implement its Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) Modernization Initiative.
“Both UNOS and the Modernization Initiative have the same goal: to strengthen the organ donation and transplant system to help save more lives. That’s why we are pleased the Committee worked on a bipartisan basis to provide the necessary funding requested by President Biden in his fiscal year 2025 budget request to help more people access the lifesaving transplants they need.
This much-needed funding would enable HRSA to fully fund its Modernization Initiative. We thank the Committee namely U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, and Ranking Member U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) for their commitment to providing the full funding needed to modernize the OPTN.”
UNOS supports the Modernization Initiative and urged Congress to fully fund the President’s FY 2025 budget request to implement the Modernization Initiative.
Importantly, if enacted, the bill provides a $13 million increase in funding above FY 2024 levels for the OPTN Modernization Initiative to strengthen the nation’s organ donation and transplant system.
