White House issues National Donate Life Month proclamation

National Donate Life Month celebrates the generosity of those who have saved lives, and encourages others to become registered donors

I call upon every person to share the gift of life and hope with those in need of a lifesaving or life-enhancing transplant by becoming organ, eye, tissue, marrow, and blood donors.

Joseph R. Biden Jr., President of the United States of America

President Joe Biden has issued a proclamation recognizing April as National Donate Life Month. The recognition honors those who have become donors, their families and friends who supported their decision and the committed healthcare professionals within the transplant community.

“Despite the extraordinary challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 saw organ transplants from deceased donors set an annual record for the 10th consecutive year—a testament to Americans’ generosity and selflessness even in times of unbearable loss,” Biden said in the proclamation.

Organ donation from deceased donors in the United States set an all-time record in 2020. A total of 12,587 people provided one or more organs to save and enhance the lives of others, representing an increase of six percent over 2019. With a focus on performance, innovation and equity, UNOS is always looking for ways to improve the organ donation and transplant system to save as many lives as possible.

“Thanks to the resilience of our organ donation and transplantation professionals and the caring nature of the American people, more than 39,000 life-saving or life-enhancing organ transplants were performed in the United States last year from both living and deceased donors,” Biden said.

National Donate Life Month was created by Donate Life America and its partners in 2003. Every April, NDLM encourages people to register as an organ, eye, and tissue donor, and honors those who have saved lives through the gift of donation.
