Innovations and Technology

UNOS’ organ matching technology is working 24/7, 365 days a year

The organ transplant system continues to achieve unprecedented stability

At the United Network for Organ Sharing, we are entrusted with managing the organ donation and transplant system for the United States, a mission that directly saves thousands of lives each year.

In 2025, our focus remains steadfast: Ensuring that the technology we develop operates with the utmost stability, security and efficiency to match organ donors with recipients, effectively and equitably.

In 2024, we faced significant challenges, including navigating a massive global technology outage security issue – the CrowdStrike incident. Despite this and other hurdles, UNOS’ organ transplant matching technology demonstrated remarkable stability, achieving a 99.99% system uptime. This reliability is critical for supporting the 24/7 operations that hospitals, organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and transplant professionals rely on to save lives.

While some have questioned the technology’s age and stability, the system’s uptime proves it is strong and secure, matching patients with lifesaving organs 24/7, 365 days a year.

To meet the nation’s needs, UNOS is continuously evolving and improving its systems and technology by ensuring timely and important updates. This includes utilizing cloud technologies to support modern infrastructure, leveraging the latest security and data improvements, implementing APIs to share valuable organ transplant data, and more.

Like all IT systems, maintaining a stable and secure platform requires ongoing investments and updates. UNOS is committed to making these enhancements to ensure that our technology remains resilient, adaptable and capable of supporting the lifesaving work it enables every day.

UNOS’ proactive approach to infrastructure management and modern software development proves that our matching technology maintained service with limited interruptions. This accomplishment underscores UNOS’ commitment to ensuring its technology is playing its part in helping patients get the lifesaving transplants they need.
