Mark Johnson brings a wealth of global leadership experience to his role as interim CEO of UNOS. With more than 30 years focused on financial and operating excellence, strategy development and business transformation, he is a longtime advocate for improving healthcare delivery and organizational performance. Johnson combines strategic insight with a commitment to mission-driven leadership.

Johnson joined the UNOS Board of Directors in April 2025 and stepped into the interim CEO role in December 2025. As interim CEO, he will build on UNOS’ work to strengthen organ donation and transplant systems, leading new initiatives, advancing data-driven research and analysis, expanding expert consulting services and advancing patient-centered reforms.

Before joining UNOS as interim CEO, he served as CEO of Averhealth, where he led a successful turnaround that strengthened operations and improved efficiency for the nationwide provider of drug and alcohol testing in the criminal justice sector. Additionally, he served as CEO of BetterMed Urgent Care, where he guided the organization through significant growth and the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at MeadWestvaco as vice president of marketing, strategy, and innovation, and gained deep financial expertise as division CFO for NBC Universal, director of corporate M&A at General Electric, and SVP of finance at ESPN.

Johnson has served on numerous boards, including Averhealth, BetterMed Urgent Care, South State Bank Virginia, Massey Cancer Center, St. Christopher’s School, Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Architecture Foundation. His governance experience reflects a strong commitment to organizational health and community impact.

Based in Richmond, Virginia, Johnson earned his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville. He is also a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Kentucky.

Johnson reports to the UNOS Board of Directors.
