Today, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) issued the following statement regarding the Medicare billing guidance on molecular testing for solid organ allograft rejection, which is one of the tests to determine if a transplanted organ is functioning appropriately.
“Transplant patients should have complete access to proven innovations available for maintaining transplant health and assessing transplant rejection or injury. Furthermore, transplant care teams should be the decision makers when it comes to patient care and must have clear guidance regarding payor requirements. It is widely understood that one of the benefits of transplant is that it minimizes the cost of care that would have otherwise been required.
UNOS urges CMS to ensure transparency in the development of Medicare coverage policies and guidance and alignment with the goals of providing patient-centered, high-quality lifesaving, and life-enhancing care to all Americans, including those who have received an organ transplant.”
