The adopted policy changes are intended to enhance the efficiency of the processes of offering and accepting donated organs for transplant candidates. In addition, the Board announced plans to convene an ad hoc Committee on Geography to advise the Board on common principles for more systematic evaluation of geographic aspects of organ distribution.
At its meeting December 5, 2017, the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors restored full member privileges for Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA), an organ procurement organization providing services to six counties in South Florida.
A set of policy amendments was approved to reduce geographic differences in liver transplant candidates’ access to a timely transplant.
Two years since its implementation, the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act (also known as the HOPE Act) has continued to provide transplant opportunities for candidates with HIV who are willing to accept organ offers from HIV-positive donors.
