More than 30K transplants performed annually for first time in US, thanks to increased donations
The rate of organ transplant and deceased donation increased substantially in 2015. The number of living donors also rose.
This incredible milestone is possible only because of donors and their families who make the generous decision to share life through donation.
This landmark achievement is a testament to the generosity of the American public to help others through donation, and their trust in the transplant system to honor their life-saving gift.
Families like the Armsteads have helped drive a trend and set a new record

She and her husband Cliff made a decision they say they’ll never regret. They donated their son’s organs — both kidneys, his liver and his pancreas.

Matching organs with patients in need
As of May 19, 2015, the national transplant allocation system developed by UNOS had coordinated 500,000 organ transplants from deceased donors in the United States since its beginning in October 1987. More than 250,000 recipients of these transplants are estimated to still be alive.

HOPE Act
On Nov. 21, 2015, UNOS updated its national transplant policies and data systems to support a federal law that will allow the use of HIV-positive donor organs for HIV-positive candidates under a feasibility study. The federal HIV Organ Policy Equity Act (also known as the HOPE Act) is expected to allow more organs from HIV-negative donors to be used for HIV-negative candidates. Learn more
Imagine now we take hundreds or maybe thousands of people off of the list, then everybody behind them moves forward. So people with HIV are benefited directly and everybody else on the list is benefited indirectly. And we’re all very excited to get started.

Sharing best practices to increase transplants
UNOS helps increase the number of transplants by providing members information that can help them continually improve outcomes. We share member practices that increase the number of lives saved so they can be implemented across the nation.
Setting standards for face and hand transplants
The Board approved standards for Vascular Composite Allografts (VCAs), such as face and hand transplantation, including membership requirements for VCA programs, allocation of VCA from deceased donors and authorization of VCA donation from deceased donors.
Increasing access to lung transplants for children
The Board approved lung allocation policy changes that will give pediatric candidates more chances to receive lungs from donors who are also younger than 18. This change is expected to increase the rate of lung transplants for children without significantly affecting adults.
New kidney allocation system continues to achieve goals
Data analysis in 2015 shows that changes to kidney allocation policy are having the intended effects. Transplants have increased for the most difficult-to-match patients and those who were on dialysis for long time before being listed for a kidney. Longevity matching is also working.

New rules bringing kidneys to hardest-to-transplant patients

It’s been a year since the United Network for Organ Sharing changed rules for the transplant waiting list, aiming to decrease disparities and squeeze the most benefit from a scarce resource: kidneys from deceased donors. Now data from UNOS shows that the changes are helping certain patients, including giving those expected to live the longest a better shot at the fittest kidneys.
In Abingdon, Virginia, 8-year-old Marshall Jones was one of the lucky first recipients. A birth defect severely damaged his kidneys and a failed transplant when he was younger left his immune system abnormally primed to reject kidneys from 99 percent of donors.
Five years of lifesaving service
Patients like Virginia turned to the kidney paired donation pilot program UNOS operates, which has arranged 170 kidney transplants since it began on October 27, 2010.
Financials
UNOS operates on a fiscal year schedule beginning October 1 and ending September 30. This schedule coincides with the federal budget cycle, as UNOS holds the federal contract to operate the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN).
The OPTN is a cost-sharing and cost-reimbursement contract in which the federal government contributed $5,109,985 in federal appropriations and the transplant community contributed $39,786,934 of the $44,896,919 program in fiscal year 2015.
OPTN funding represents 79.0% of UNOS revenues. The remaining 21.0% of revenues comprised UNOS fees, data services, meeting registration fees and charitable contributions. These additional revenues provide resources needed to support the OPTN contract and supports the UNOS mission.
