Job Description:

LifeShare of Oklahoma is continuing to grow and has an immediate opening for a second organ recovery surgeon! The Organ Recovery Surgeon, based in Oklahoma City, is responsible for the surgical recovery of organs for transplantation and/or research in the operative setting. In support of the organization’s life-saving core purpose, the recovery surgeon serves a vital role in the organ donation process, leading to life-saving gifts being transplanted. In addition to LifeShare’s current recovery surgeon, the selected candidate will take organ donor recovery call to provide surgical recovery of organs for the purpose of transplantation.

LifeShare works closely with three local transplant centers (OU Medical Center, INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, and St. John’s Medical Center) and 145 healthcare organizations in the state of Oklahoma to facilitate donation.

Education and Experience:

  • The successful candidate will be a Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), who is board certified in general surgery with a current license. Candidates who have received equivalent training outside the U.S with relevant organ procurement experience, of at minimum of five years, may be considered.
  • Training and experience in the surgical procurement (both DCD and BD donation) of kidneys, liver and pancreas required, equivalent training and experience in the recovery of heart and lungs preferred.


Essential duties:

  • Assumes on-call responsibilities as required (minimum of 20 days of call per month) to assure adequate coverage for donor activity. When on-call, must be available to surgically recover organs at any time set by the LifeShare staff and the Administrator on call
  • Serves as an employee of the OPO to surgically recover organs for transplantation and research in donor hospitals throughout the LifeShare service area, as well as regionally and nationally as required.
  • In concert with the accepting center medical staff, evaluates and retrieves organs in accordance with OPO and OPTN standards.
  • Participates in the development of programs and makes recommendations to improve the quality and efficiency of recovery and allocation process of donated organs.
  • Participates as requested to assist in the recovery of organs for transplant within the region or nationally.
  • Assists with surgical training and education in programs that are aimed at increasing donation including, but not limited to, ex-vivo organ perfusion studies and recovery of organs for research and education.
  • Provides clinical and didactic teaching to LifeShare staff and local resident surgeons as requested by their institutions.
