Donor Network West Receives Innovation Award For Donor Transfer Recovery Partnership

(San Ramon, CA) April 11, 2017 – Donor Network West, the federally-designated organ and tissue recovery organization for northern California and Nevada, has been honored with the Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group’s #Gamechangers Award for its donor transfer recovery partnership with San Ramon Regional Medical Center. The collaboration, the first of its kind in California, benefits donor families by streamlining the organ recovery process.

Since early 2016, Donor Network West has been transferring potential donors to San Ramon Regional’s facilities as a way to accommodate a more certain time frame for the recovery of organs. Last year, 161 organs were recovered from 49 donors who were transferred to the hospital from 30 hospitals in Donor Network West’s service area. A significant reduction in the overall average case time for brain dead donors was observed as a result.

“Honoring and respecting the donors and families we serve is at the core of our mission. This change in practice is helping to relieve some of the organ recovery timing stress for donor families and allowing for better planning during a very difficult time,” says Donor Network West’s CEO, Cindy Siljestrom. Ms. Siljestrom accepted the award from San Ramon Mayor, Bill Clarkson in a ceremony held in Pleasanton, CA on March 29.

Along with decreasing wait times for donor families in the ICU, transferring organ donors to San Ramon Regional improves the logistical challenges of transporting staff and surgeons across the region and maximizes resources so more lives can be saved. Year-to-date data reveals that Donor Network West is on pace to surpass 100 organs donors transferred to the hospital in 2017.

California’s Tri-Valley region is comprised of the Amador, Livermore and San Ramon valleys and is home to the cities of Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin, San Ramon as well as the town of Danville. The #Gamechangers Awards are presented to companies for innovations that create better products, processes and services in the region, with proven regional and global impacts. Donor Network West was nominated by the San Ramon Chamber of Commerce and the City’s Economic Development Director.

“The Tri-Valley is where the best minds in the world are at work in a culture that sees the value of collaboration as far more productive than the aggressive competition we see elsewhere,” says Dale Eldridge Kaye, CEO of the Innovation Tri-Valley Leadership Group.

There are nearly 10,600 people waiting for an organ transplant in northern California and Nevada. One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and a tissue donor can heal more than 75 others. Anyone can register as a donor at DonorNetworkWest.org or at the DMV.
