Marcelo Fernandez-Vina

Marcelo Fernández-Viña, Ph.D., D(ABHI), is director of the histocompatibility typing laboratory and professor of laboratory medicine at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Dr. Fernández-Viña served as chair of the ad hoc committee on "HLA molecular typing of zero antigen mismatch transplant pairs," a collaborative study of UNOS and the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).

He is president-elect of ASHI and councillor of the International Histocompatibility Workshop. He also is an HLA expert for the National Marrow Donor Program for its contract with HRSA. Dr. Fernández-Viña is section editor for Human Immunology. He served on ASHI's board of directors and also as chair of its ad hoc committee on "common and rare alleles list for ASHI proficiency.: He has been a member of the board of trustees of the Transplant Resource Center of Maryland (now the Living Legacy Foundation).

He earned two doctoral degrees, one in biochemistry from the School of Basic Sciences in Rosario, Argentina, and the other in internal medicine from the University of Buenos Aires Medical School in Argentina.
