Standard Transplant Analysis and Research (STAR) Dataset Files

STAR files allow analysis of virtually all of the data variables on transplant recipients collected on UNetsm forms. Now available on CD-ROM, in SAS or in ASCII format, UNOS offers two types of STAR files to researchers with advanced programming skills. STAR files are available by organ type, and contain patient-level data for all transplant candidates and/or recipients:

Transplant / Follow UpWaiting List
  • Kidney, Pancreas, and Kidney-Pancreas
  • Liver
  • Thoracic (Heart, Lung, Heart-Lung)
  • Kidney, Pancreas, and Kidney-Pancreas
  • Liver
  • Thoracic (Heart, Lung, Heart-Lung)

Each waiting list STAR File contains information on all waiting list registrations listed and all transplants performed in the U.S. since October 1, 1987. There is one record per waiting list registration/transplant event, and each record includes the most recent follow-up information (including transplant and follow-up data for those transplanted) reported to the OPTN as of the date the file was created.

The transplant STAR files contain information on all deceased and living donor transplants in the U.S. and reported to the OPTN since October 1, 1987. There is one record per transplant, and each record includes the most recent follow-up information. An additional file with one record per post-transplant follow-up report is also included.

Free to researchers from UNOS/OPTN member institutions, each CD is created with the most recent data as reported to UNOS:

  • More than 500 variables from most UNetsm forms
  • A number of calculated variables
  • Extensive documentation of data variables

Users will receive a Microsoft ExcelTM spreadsheet that includes a detailed description/history of each variable. Also included are many pre-calculated variables such as level of HLA match/mismatch, distance from donor hospital to transplant center, and certain waiting list data. Files including center identifiers may be provided pending submission of a Concept Paper and signature of a Data Use Agreement.
