10/19/2014National Organ Transplant Act enacted 30 years ago
 On October 19, 1984, the Congress of the United States approved the National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA). It not only established the framework for the U.S. organ transplant system but has served as a model for development of other transplant networks worldwide.

 United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) hired Brian Sullivan as Director of Technology Operations. UNOS manages the nation’s transplant system, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), under contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Services and Resources Administration.

 Rosemont, Ill. – Approximately 400 people attended a public forum held on Sept. 16 to discuss various concepts to reduce geographic variation in access to liver transplantation.

 As of September 12, nearly 350 participants have registered for the public forum sponsored by the OPTN/UNOS Liver and Intestinal Organ Transplantation Committee to discuss concepts intended to increase equity in access to liver transplantation.
9/9/2014Summary of liver concept questionnaire results available
 The OPTN/UNOS Liver and Intestinal Organ Transplantation Committee has made available a summary of results to the questionnaire distributed June 16 regarding alternative concepts for liver distribution. Results of the questionnaire will be further discussed, and additional public input sought, at a public forum on September 16.

 A series of three living donor kidney transplants performed July 7, 2014, marked the 98th, 99th and 100th that were arranged through the OPTN/UNOS Kidney Paired Donation Pilot Program (KPDPP).

6/24/2014OPTN/UNOS Board approves initial policies regarding limb and face transplantation, new policies for pediatric heart allocation
 The OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors, at its meeting June 23 and 24, unanimously approved the first national policies and standards for transplantation of limbs, faces and other structures collectively known as vascularized composite allografts (VCAs).

 The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced May 23 that it would retain the existing “protected class” status for immunosuppressant medications available as a benefit under Medicare Part D coverage.

 Upcoming improvements to allocation of deceased donor kidneys for candidates in the U.S. will likely improve overall patient survival and lengthen kidney function, according to a study published online on May 15 by the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN).
