Through a $1 million gift from the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation UNOS was able to complete the build-out of our headquarters facility with a technology lab. Dedicated in September 2006, The Richard DeVos Transplant Technology Center houses the staff, equipment and systems design, testing and maintenance activities devoted to the development and testing of new software solutions, as well as offline maintenance to existing systems.
Richard DeVos, co-founder of Amway Corp. and a heart transplant recipient, owns the NBA's Orlando Magic. DeVos and his wife, Helen, are long-time supporters of donation and transplantation and of UNOS. He serves as co-chair of UNOS' National Speakers Bureau and was a speaker at the groundbreaking ceremony for the National Donor Memorial at UNOS headquarters.
In November 2006, the F.M. Kirby Foundation jump-started our $9.1 million campaign for the UNOS Systems Restructure with a $1 million gift. The Restructure is a comprehensive overhaul of all electronic functions and data storage architecture associated with candidate listing, waiting list maintenance, organ matching, post-transplant follow-up data collection and all processes associated with quality and safety monitoring. The redesign will provide the community a more efficient and faster system in a world where every second counts and every organ can save a life.
The F.M. Kirby Foundation, based in Morristown, N.J., has been a generous supporter of UNOS since 1997 whose generosity has focused on organ procurement best practices education, the F. M. Kirby Foundation Organ Center at UNOS, and a number of technology infrastructure needs.
Because of the generosity of companies like Dominion Resources, UNOS has continued to reach out directly to members of the transplant community, church groups, civic organizations and the general public by participating in exhibits and presentations around the country. These have included the National Medical Association, NAACP, American Transplant congress, National Black Nurses’ Association, and International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation.
